I think innovation in snacks usually comes in the form of combining unusual flavors. What is the title referring to you ask? Green Tea Kit Kat bars! I never thought this dream would come true, but someone combined two very simple, pleasant-tasting sweets together. Though I have never eaten such a wafered delight, I do want to try it some day. After all, white chocolate and green tea are two of my favorite flavors of sweets =)
Two days ago, I had the pleasure of eating at a vegetarian restaurant with a frankly not-so-appealing name. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I had Santa Fe Crispy Chicken with a side of Sweetheart Fries. I honestly could not tell the difference between chicken and tofu chicken! As cliche as that may sound, the burger tasted so realistic and flavorful in its own right that I didn't even think about tofu at first.
I liked the spicy flavor of the burger in addition to much material it has-- avocado is my favorite! The fries are from sweet yam, hence the name. They too taste great, espcially with the honey mustard-like sauce. In terms of drinks, Veggie Grill doesn't have soda but has 3 kinds of ice tea, pink lemonade and raspberry juice instead! I think Veggie Grill lives up to its motto of "Perfect Indulgence."
I still haven't eaten any particularly good snacks which makes me a little bit sad. It's just that Asian markets are so limited in Westwood! Grr. I'm sorry!! When I go home I'm going to feast on a whole bunch of Ramune, chips from Mitsuwa and try a lot of new things :)
nothing has changed and i still love snacks as much as ever before... BUT i haven't had the chance to try any new ones since college started T___T hmm, there has to be a way to replenish my appetite for novel trivial food with little to no nutritional value. just making sure this site is still alive :)
Even though I don't drink coffee or go to Starbucks, I am very pleased with their new Sorbetto =) They worked with Pinkberry to make a yogurt-flavored icy treat that turned out surprisingly well. Sometimes people don't like frozen yogurt that is too tangy, but in liquid/ice form it doesn't taste that tangy.
Yes, it is overpriced at $2.95 a cup, but Starbucks IS a bit overpriced in everything... This drink is worth it though! I could see this new combination backfiring on Starbucks though: Yogurt fans will stick to the usual frozen-yogurt chains while coffee purists dislike the company for moving away from coffee. I have heard that Starbucks is not doing so well lately and are closing down many stores; they're probably trying new ideas out and maybe catching on the yogurt craze? In any case, the Sorbetto is a delicious drink that I hope they keep offering.
Chocolate Skittles came out in 2007 but I didn't try them until yesterday. All I can say is that the original rainbow-colored Skittles are still my favorite. Getting something that's not chocolate to taste like chocolate is difficult. They came in 5 flavors: s'mores, vanilla, brownie batter, chocolate pudding and chocolate caramel. Not that the flavors aren't enticing, but they taste the same. Although regular Skittles taste the same after a while too...
More importantly, here's a nice how-to video on opening Ramune bottles =)
They are fizzy soda drinks with a marble inside. As tempting as it is, you cannot take the marble out without breaking the bottle. And surely the risk of blood and sharp glass shards is not worth a small crystal marble? Just kidding. After you finish the drink you can keep the bottle WITH the marble in it for all the gaze upon.
PS. Today I had a really nice dream about ice cream. In it, I was at school and this club was selling ice cream cones for a fundraiser. The strange thing is that a group of monks was also visiting our school and selling food! So after I got this meatball-on-a-stick type treat and finished it, it was already the end of lunch (5 minutes left). Luckily, the club was still selling so I got an ice cream cone. IT WAS THE MOST DIVINE ICE CREAM EVER. The outside was vanilla like usual, but the inside is caramel with a cookie-like texture. I can't explain it since it was in a dream, but the inside was so delicious, sweet and perfect after eating meatballs.
I never mention candy on this blog, when in fact it's a big reason why I love Asian snacks! Nothing against Reese's Pieces, M&M's, Milky Way or Skittles-- they are all good in their own right. But something about the way these candy are packaged and taste makes them awesome. (But I DO love how American candy have "history" with their roles in movies and stuff. Or you see a random bag of Sour Patch laying conveniently on the table as the camera pans across the living room.)
So today I'll focus on chocolate. Because I'm not a big fan of dark chocolate, these mild kind of milk chocolate suits me just fine, combined with graham-ish crackers and sticks. They're usually molded into cute shapes like mushrooms or strawberries, other times like animal faces. I went to a Korean store once and their chocolate had emoticons on them. Serious-- faces like "TT_TT," "n_n" and "@_@"
Pocky is a category all of its own. It's probably the most recognizable snack from Japan. It's just so simple to eat and share with other people in a non-weird way. Anyway, more in-depth reports on candy to come!! Hi-chews, Ferrero Rocher will all have their moment in the spotlight-- deservedly so.
